WHETHER they are professional cancer caregivers, immediate family, friends, or non-governmental organisations, it is evident that caring for a person who has cancer is a daunting task. It is both physically and mentally taxing on the caregiver.
"Emotions can run high when it comes to dealing with cancer patients. Apart from the physical manifestation of the disease, it also affects patients psychologically and spiritually. The pain, suffering and death can be overbearing for loved ones too. Sometimes, the illness also affects the caregiver, which is something that many don't realise," said Dr Ednin Hamzah, chief executive officer and medical director of Hospis Malaysia.
He said it is harder on non-professional caregivers because more often than not they are related to the patient.
"Professional caregivers are trained to have the right attitude, skills and knowledge in looking after cancer patients. The family structure has so many emotional links that sometimes judgement on what's best for the patient becomes clouded," said Dr Ednin.
